The competition tasks of this skill category are based on the Vocational qualification in Information and Communications Technology. The degree title in the Vocational qualification in Information and Communications Technology is IT network installer. 

The tasks can include telecommunications cabling, deployment and maintenance tasks, as well as customer service tasks in maintenance and installation.

Description of the skill

The competition tasks of the skill category are based on the requirements of the basics of a IT network installer’s qualification at an excellent level. The task tests the competitors’ skills in building and maintaining telecommunications networks and solving problems.

The evaluation of the tasks is based on a high-level installation work quality, compliance with the sector’s regulations, compliance with safe working methods, cleanliness of work, desired functionality, customer service situations related to installation work, good information security, consideration of sustainable development and documentation of work, measurements and regulations.

The competitor is required to have good oral and written English skills and fluent customer service skills relevant to the tasks.

The competition tasks are in Finnish. If there are Swedish native speakers in the finals, the tasks will be delivered in Swedish.

The competition is individual.

Skill requirements

You know how to

  • comply with electrical work and occupational safety regulations
  • interpret installation drawings, plan and deploy telecommunications cabling work in a property that comply with standards, valid regulations, manufacturers’ instructions and good installation practices, considering the safety of the working environment and other people
  • install IT network devices in accordance with current regulations, standards, manufacturer’s instructions and the requirements of the customer environment
  • handle telecommunications network structures, interfaces, topology and communication technologies
  • use the most common components, cable types and other infrastructure used in data networks and manage their handling
  • connect, configure and test network active devices to the telecommunications network appropriately considering information security
  • use management software to monitor a telecommunications network and active devices
  • find, locate and repair faults
  • guide users and customers in using IT network devices
  • use measuring instruments and interpret measurement results
  • carry out standard acceptance testing and inspections of networks
  • ensure that the work is carried out safely and to a high standard
  • prepare appropriate documentation on installations and make the necessary changes to the documents
  • ensure the finishing and tidiness of the installation environment and the sorting of waste generated during installation work
